British singer Liam Payne was quietly dropped by his record label, Universal Music, due to concerns that the music he wanted to create wouldn’t appeal to his One Direction fanbase, sources have revealed.
Creative Differences with the Label
Payne, who passed away at 31 years old after falling from a third-floor balcony in Buenos Aires, had been working on his second album when his label decided to put the project on hold and ultimately cut ties with him.
A source speaking to DailyMail.com disclosed,
“Liam wanted to make the sort of music he enjoyed, but his label didn’t think it would resonate with One Direction fans. There were disagreements about how to market his brand.”
Budget Cuts and Public Image Issues
In addition to creative differences, budget cuts across the music industry were reportedly another factor in Universal’s decision to release Payne.
“The entire music industry is making cuts, and Universal chose to invest in other artists,” the insider explained.
The source also noted that Payne’s growing negative online reputation played a role in the decision:
“The memes and jokes about him online were becoming a problem. His team saw them as a signal to jump ship.”
Struggles in His Personal Life
The end of Payne’s professional relationships coincided with personal difficulties. His PR team resigned earlier this month, leaving him without publicity support. At the same time, his ex-fiancée Maya Henry initiated legal action, accusing him of repeatedly contacting her after their breakup.
“It was like his entire solo career, which he built over eight years, was crumbling around him,” a source lamented. “It must have devastated him.”
Universal Music’s Tribute
Despite the circumstances, Universal Music Group paid tribute to the late singer following his death, posting:
“We are devastated by the tragic passing of Liam Payne. His legacy will live on through his music and the countless fans he inspired and who adored him. We send our deepest condolences to Liam’s family and loved ones.”
Liam Payne’s solo journey, which began with high hopes after One Direction’s split, ended with his career in shambles, compounded by personal challenges and industry setbacks.
