Buku Abi Opens Up in “Karma: A Daughter’s Journey” Documentary
Buku Abi, 26, the daughter of R. Kelly, has disclosed the emotional toll of alleged sexual abuse by her father, which led her to multiple suicide attempts. In the new documentary “Karma: A Daughter’s Journey”, Abi reveals that her father’s actions during her childhood shattered her mental health and forced her into long-term therapy.
Abuse and Mental Health Struggles
Abi recounted how R. Kelly allegedly abused her when she was 8 or 9 years old. She first reported the incident to her mother, Andrea Kelly, in 2009, when she was around 10 years old. However, the trauma had already pushed Abi to a breaking point, leading to repeated suicide attempts.
“I hit a point where I didn’t care if I lived or died. I tried to take my own life several times.”
She explained that she finally confided in her mother one day on the way to school:
“I just started crying and told her, ‘I don’t think I can do this anymore.'”
Andrea immediately admitted Abi into a mental hospital, where she stayed for two-and-a-half weeks under strict observation.
Impact on Her Family
Abi expressed guilt about how her depression affected her siblings, Jaah (23) and Robert Jr. (22). In the documentary, Robert Jr. opened up about how terrifying it was to see his sister struggle:
“Waking up every day, not knowing if my sister would still be alive—that was one of the hardest things I’ve ever experienced.”
Abi admitted:
“I knew I was hurting my family too, but I didn’t know how to stop the pain.”
Abi’s Struggle to Accept the Truth
Abi revealed how difficult it was to reconcile the image of her father with the man who allegedly hurt her:
“For a long time, I didn’t want to believe it. Even if my father was a bad person, I thought he wouldn’t do something like this to me.”
Fear kept her silent for year
“I was too scared to tell anyone, even my mom.”
R. Kelly’s Legal Team Denies the Allegations
Kelly’s attorney, Jennifer Bonjean, denied the accusations, stating:
“These allegations were previously investigated by the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services and found to be unfounded.”
Bonjean criticized the documentary’s creators for not reaching out to Kelly or his legal team for a response:
“It’s unfortunate that these claims are being presented without allowing Mr. Kelly to defend himself.”
R. Kelly’s Criminal Convictions
Though R. Kelly was acquitted in 2008 on child pornography charges, he was later found guilty in separate trials in 2021 and 2022:
2021: Convicted on nine counts of racketeering and sex trafficking in New York, receiving a 30-year sentence.
2022: Convicted on child pornography and obstruction of justice charges in Chicago. While he was sentenced to 20 years, 19 of those years will run concurrently with his earlier sentence.
Kelly is now serving a 31-year sentence at a federal prison in North Carolina.
