Mercy Eke Heartbroken After Losing Over N100m in Heritage Bank Collapse
On June 3rd, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) revoked the banking license of Heritage Bank Plc, leaving its depositors and shareholders in a difficult situation. The CBN explained that the revocation was due to the bank’s failure to improve its financial performance. Consequently, the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) has been appointed as the bank’s liquidator. The NDIC has stated it will pay a maximum of N5 million in insured deposits to each customer, with additional funds being paid out as the bank’s assets are realized.
Among those affected is popular reality star and media personality, Mercy Eke, who had significantly more than N5 million deposited in the bank. Mercy has expressed her distress on social media regarding the situation. Here is her statement:
MERCY EKE: “I really don’t know how to react to this. I have been hoping for the best, thinking there’s a way out… #heritagebank. I have over N100m with them. How can they pay N5m from someone’s millions? I have been praying. [My account manager] lured me into fixing my money, knowing fully well there have been issues with the bank. I don’t have words for her; I blame myself. [Heritage Bank] was the bank that sponsored BBN during my set, and for them to pay our money, we were advised to open an account with them. Stupid me went ahead and funded the account. Don’t worry, I’m full of regrets right now. May God help me💔.”*
My heart goes out to Mercy Eke and all other account holders at Heritage Bank who are experiencing this hardship. I can’t imagine the immense pain they must be feeling right now.
