After being removed from a Whatsapp group, a man launches a lawsuit.
In a recent development, a legal dispute has arisen in Uganda as a man took legal action after being expelled from a Whatsapp group.
Herbert Baitwababo, the aggrieved individual, approached the court claiming that the ‘Buyanja My Roots’ Whatsapp group, which was dedicated to their Buyanja sub-county in Rukungiri district, was initially established to support charitable causes, offer condolences, and provide assistance to local residents.
According to Mr. Baitwababo’s affidavit, the members of the group collectively agreed to establish an association and pay a subscription fee of Sh.30,000. He fully registered as a member, and all communication and association matters were conducted through the Whatsapp group.
However, trouble arose between Baitwababo and the group administrator, Allan Asinguza, when Baitwababo requested an audit report and financial transparency regarding the funds collected since the group’s inception in 2017.
As a result of his removal from the Whatsapp group on May 17, 2023, Baitwababo felt compelled to seek legal redress.
The court, in its ruling, directed the group administrator to reinstate Baitwababo and issued an injunction to prevent any future expulsion from the ‘Buyanja My Roots’ Whatsapp group.
The court’s decision emphasized that such actions would infringe upon Baitwababo’s right and freedom of association.
