Donald Trump’s Trial Judge Loses Patience During Testimony, Exclaims ‘This is Ridiculous!’
Manhattan Judge Reacts Sternly During Trump’s Civil Fraud Trial
In the midst of Donald Trump’s $250 million civil fraud trial, the Manhattan judge presiding over the case, Justice Arthur Engoron, displayed his frustration as attorneys questioned the former president’s ex-accountant. The judge slammed his hand on the bench and exclaimed, “This is ridiculous!” in response to what he deemed as inconsistent testimony from the accountant, Donald Bender.
The tension in the courtroom arose as Trump’s supporters accused Bender of evading their questions. Trump’s legal team had been pushing for a thorough review of his financial records with Bender year after year.
Justice Engoron firmly told them, “Don’t waste time,” expressing his impatience.
Trump’s attorney, Jesus Suarez, had been cross-examining Bender for an extended period, causing Engoron’s exasperation. Engoron’s reaction to the proceedings prompted Trump to raise his arms in frustration.
The judge also questioned the attorneys about their conduct and whether they were addressing the press, the public, or him. He reminded them that there was no jury present.
Despite the contentious trial, Trump left for Florida after the lunch break and may or may not return to court. Attorney General Letitia James, who attended the entire trial, characterized Trump’s presence as a “political stunt” and a “fundraising shutdown.” She reaffirmed her commitment to justice.
Engoron lightened the mood after lunch by acknowledging attorney Kevin Wallace’s birthday, adding humor to the proceedings. Later in the day, Camron Harris, an auditor, testified, and Bender continued his testimony.
Trump’s appearance at the courthouse prompted protests, and he used press and social media to criticize the case and its participants. Engoron had issued a limited order of silence on Tuesday afternoon due to Trump’s comments.
In court, Trump criticized James, alleging that the lawsuits were part of her gubernatorial campaign and referred to it as a “railroad” and “the beginning of communism in our country.” He also hinted at the possibility of becoming the next Speaker of the House.
As Trump left the courthouse, he reiterated his belief that the trial was “rigged.”
The defense filed a notice of appeal against Engoron’s previous ruling, which favored the Attorney General’s claims and revoked Trump’s business licenses in New York.
The Attorney General’s office contends that Trump inflated his assets for years to obtain favorable loans, insurance, and boost his Forbes billionaire ranking, allegations that Trump’s legal team disputes, claiming he repaid his loans and benefited banks with his business dealings.
