Tensions Rise in Osun State as 28-Year-Old Farmer is Fatally Shot in Land Dispute, Communal Crisis Imminent (Watch)
A potential communal crisis is looming in Osun State as an unfortunate incident unfolded where unidentified gunmen took the life of a 28-year-old farmer named Sodiq Alamu during a land dispute. The dispute centers around a piece of land dividing the Ilobu community in the Irepodun local government area and Ifon-Orolu in the Orolu local government area of Osun state. Tensions had been escalating for some time, with Ilobu alleging that Ifon-Orolu was plotting unrest in the Opapa area, which is part of the contested land.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on Friday, September 15, 2023, when unknown gunmen attacked Sodiq Alamu on his farm in the Opapa area of the Ilobu community. The Ilobu-Asake Development Union’s Public Relations Officer, Tairu Babatunde, stated that individuals named Eesa of Ifon-Osun, Babatunde Oyetunji, and a Prince of Ifon-Osun, Jide Akinyooye, had apparently carried out their threats by taking the life of an Ilobu resident, Sodiq of Aganna’s compound. The Divisional Police Officer of Ilobu led a police team to remove the victim’s body, and calls have been made for the apprehension of the culprits.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Police Command has urged the residents of Ilobu and Ifon to remain calm. The spokesperson of the command, SP Opalola Yemisi Olawoyin, assured the public that an investigation into Sodiq Alamu’s killing is currently underway. The police are aware of potential gatherings and meetings aimed at inciting violence within the communities and have been working to maintain peace. The Commissioner of Police, CP Patrick Kehinde Longer, has been engaging with community leaders and stakeholders to encourage peace and ensure that those responsible for this tragic incident face justice.
