A United Airlines flight bound for Rome from Newark encountered a harrowing incident on Wednesday. Within a mere 10 minutes, the Boeing 777 aircraft descended over 28,000 feet due to a cabin pressurization issue, compelling the pilot to reverse course towards New Jersey.
United Airlines Flight 510, carrying 270 passengers and 14 crew members, did not reach its intended destination of Rome-Fiumicino International Airport. Instead, it departed from Newark Liberty International Airport at 8:37 p.m. and returned there at 12:27 a.m., as confirmed by flight tracking data from FlightAware.
United Airlines explained that the aircraft turned back to Newark “to address a possible loss of cabin pressure,” but emphasized that there was never an actual loss of cabin pressure, ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew.
The Federal Aviation Administration corroborated that the plane experienced a “pressurization problem,” prompting the return.
Remarkably, during this incident, the aircraft descended approximately 28,000 feet in just 10 minutes, according to FlightAware data. Ultimately, the passengers bound for Italy were able to reach their original destination after disembarking from the Boeing 777 and boarding another United Airlines aircraft.
