A fourth-grade teacher and mother of two in Tennessee faces a 25-year jail sentence after being arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl and engaging with former students online.
Alissa McCommon, 38, was apprehended outside her home by the Covington Police Department and is currently held in Tipton County Jail.
She stands accused of sexually assaulting a former student in 2021 at her residence, as confirmed by Covington Police Chief Donna Turner. The Charger Academy teacher confessed to engaging in inappropriate conversations with students.
McCommon was suspended without pay on August 24 after a parent reported the allegations. Subsequently, multiple students claimed that McCommon had befriended them online and even played video games with them. It is alleged that the fourth-grade teacher sent students inappropriate images and solicited sexual activities.
Chief Turner expressed her concern, stating, “It’s unbearable. It’s indescribable and 100 percent preventable. I think that’s why we and detectives are so passionate about making sure victims are okay.”
McCommon, held on $25,000 bail, maintains her innocence. Her lawyer, Jere Mason, referred to the situation as a “borderline social media witch-hunt” and expressed frustration.
The investigation is ongoing, with police continuing to interview alleged victims. Parents believe that the teacher should have been arrested when initially suspended from school. Bianca Taylor, a parent with a child in McCommon’s class, voiced her opinion on social media.
