84-Year-Old Homeowner to Stand Trial for Shooting Black Teenager Who Knocked on Wrong Door (Watch)
An 84-year-old homeowner accused of shooting a black teenager, Ralph Yarl, who mistakenly approached his house is now set to face trial, according to a ruling by a Missouri judge. Andrew Lester, a retired mechanic, faces charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action. The incident occurred when Ralph, who is now 17 years old, was sent to collect his younger brothers but mistakenly knocked on Lester’s door on 115th Street in Kansas City after losing his phone. Ralph reached out to grab the door, assuming Lester was related to his brother’s friends. Instead, Lester told him not to return and subsequently shot Ralph in the head and arm.
During a preliminary hearing, Ralph explained the circumstances leading to the incident, emphasizing that he had no phone and had confused the houses, which were close to each other. The judge’s decision to proceed to trial was based on witness testimonies, including Ralph’s. The arraignment for Lester is scheduled for September 20th.
Ralph continues to recover from the traumatic brain injury caused by the shooting and plans to pursue a career in engineering after high school graduation. His father, Paul Yarl, noted that Ralph still grapples with psychological challenges stemming from the incident.
Lester’s defense attorney, Steve Salmon, argued that his client acted in self-defense, believing Ralph to be a potential threat attempting to rob him. Salmon pointed out Lester’s age and physical limitations, claiming he was unable to defend himself effectively. Missouri is among the states with “stand your ground” laws, permitting individuals to respond with physical force when they perceive a threat.
Notably, a significant amount of nearly $3.5 million (£2.7 million) has been raised in recent months to support Ralph and his family in coping with the aftermath of the incident.
