Ryan Preece Discharged from Hospital Following Daytona Flip (Watch)
On Sunday morning, Ryan Preece was released from Halifax Medical Center and was en route back to North Carolina, as stated in a press release by Stewart-Haas Racing. Preece experienced a dramatic barrel roll during the final laps of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday.
During Lap 156, while racing down the backstretch, Preece’s No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford made contact with the rear bumper of Erik Jones’ car. This caused Preece’s vehicle to veer left across the path of teammate Chase Briscoe’s car. Subsequently, the right side of Preece’s car lifted off the ground, leading to a series of rollovers across the grass on the back straightaway.
After enduring approximately 10 flips, Preece emerged from his car under his own power, with assistance from the AMR Safety Team. The 32-year-old was placed on a stretcher and taken to the infield care center. Later, Preece was transferred to a local medical facility for further assessment.
In the early hours of Sunday, Stewart-Haas Racing provided an update on Preece’s condition:
“NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Preece will be kept overnight at Halifax Health Medical Center for continuous observation,” read a statement from the team. “The driver of the No. 41 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing is awake, alert, and mobile, and has been in communication with family and friends. Preece is set to undergo another assessment by medical personnel later this morning.
Further updates will be provided in the afternoon.
On Saturday night, Preece shared a post on social media, acknowledging, “if you aspire to be a race car driver, you must have resilience.”
