Gunmen Seize Eight Graduates En Route to NYSC Camp in Zamfara as They Travel for Orientation Program
Reports have emerged that a group of eight graduates, en route to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Sokoto, fell victim to abduction by armed assailants. Eddy Megwa, the NYSC headquarters’ Director of Press, stated that the incident transpired during the night while the graduates were traveling to their assigned orientation facility. The gunmen intercepted the Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) bus, which was conveying the graduates from Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom, to Sokoto for their year-long national service program.
Amid the abduction, three passengers managed to escape the clutches of the gunmen, while the remaining eight individuals were taken captive. Megwa further disclosed that the Director-General of NYSC has taken immediate action by traveling to Zamfara to collaborate with law enforcement agencies, with the aim of securing the safe release of the abductees.
Megwa emphasized the inherent dangers of night travel, underlining that it is discouraged by NYSC due to the associated risks. He reiterated that NYSC’s guidelines advise participants to rest and continue their journey during daylight hours, as per their call-up letters. The current circumstances are challenging, and the NYSC administration empathizes with the plight of the prospective corps members. Megwa assured the public that the intervention of the Director-General would facilitate the timely and secure release of the abducted graduates.
