Concerns Over Rising Tensions
Chief Munir Balogun, the father of Nigerian music superstar Wizkid, has taken a stand to address the escalating rivalry between his son and fellow Afrobeats artist Davido. In a candid interview with Punch Newspapers, he expressed his worries about the growing tension and the impact of fan rivalries on both artists.
Advice to Ignore Provocations
In the interview, Chief Balogun emphasized the importance of resilience amid public scrutiny and fan provocations. He advised Wizkid to remain unfazed by comments from Davido’s supporters, who he believes are more interested in stirring drama than genuinely appreciating the music. He stated:
“I told my son that he shouldn’t look or listen to whatever the boys who are supporters of Davido are saying. The supporters are only looking for what they will say to collect money and all of that.”
Keeping Focus on Artistry
Chief Balogun highlighted the need for Wizkid to focus on his craft, warning that getting caught up in the ongoing rivalry could distract him from his artistry. He remarked:
“They are just looking for what they are going to eat and I told him not to pay much attention to them.”
Ongoing Feud Intensifies
Despite his father’s advice, Wizkid has continued to openly express his disdain for Davido, taking opportunities to criticize him in various public forums. The feud reignited recently when a video surfaced on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing a seemingly friendly interaction between the two artists at a public event. This interaction sparked curiosity among fans, who hoped it signaled a possible reconciliation.
However, Wizkid quickly clarified that the situation was not as it appeared. He alleged that Davido and his entourage had crashed a private DJ party in Lagos without an invitation, calling it an intrusion rather than a friendly visit.
Dismissive Remarks About Davido
In his response to the situation, Wizkid did not hold back, referring to Davido as a “fanboy” and claiming that the singer often seeks him out for attention. He insisted that Davido’s efforts to connect were insincere and aimed at gaining relevance in spaces where Wizkid was already in the spotlight.
Division Among Fans
Wizkid’s candid remarks have only intensified the rivalry, dividing fans into camps. Some supporters applaud Wizkid for his honesty and straightforwardness, while others criticize him for perpetuating unnecessary conflict with Davido. This ongoing drama has ignited a social media frenzy, with hashtags related to both artists trending as fans weigh in on the situation.
The Future of Their Rivalry
As tensions continue to rise, it remains unclear whether this rivalry will deescalate anytime soon or if it marks just another chapter in their long-standing competition. For now, the public can only watch and wait to see what unfolds next between these two giants of the Nigerian music scene.
In Wizkid’s own words:
“Want what? He looks for me everywhere I go like a fanboy he is! This was an event for one of my DJ’s Skyla in Lagos! We no invite dem!”
