American country music icon Garth Brooks has been accused of sexual assault and battery in a lawsuit filed by a woman identified as “Jane Roe.” The lawsuit alleges that the incidents took place in 2019 when Roe, a hairstylist and makeup artist, was working with Brooks.
Allegations Detailed in the Lawsuit
The complaint, filed in California state court on October 3, describes several alarming accusations against Brooks. Roe claims that during a work trip, he raped her and subjected her to repeated instances of inappropriate behavior, including exposing himself, sharing sexual fantasies, and sending sexually explicit messages.
Roe began working with Brooks in 2017 and states that she had previously provided hair and makeup services for his wife, Trisha Yearwood, starting in 1999. Among the allegations, she asserts that Brooks forcibly grabbed her hands and placed them on his genitals while using vulgar language. In another incident, she alleges that he raped her in a hotel room in May 2019 while they were in Los Angeles for a Grammy tribute performance.
Brooks’ Preemptive Legal Action
Prior to Roe’s lawsuit, Brooks filed a complaint as “John Doe” to prevent her from publicly discussing her allegations. He denied the claims vehemently, stating that they were false and warning of the significant damage they could inflict on his reputation, family, and career. Brooks also indicated that Roe had previously approached him with a request for salaried employment and medical benefits.
Response from Roe’s Legal Team
Roe’s legal team has criticized Brooks’ earlier lawsuit as a tactic to intimidate and silence their client. They expressed confidence that justice would prevail and commended Roe for coming forward with her allegations. Their statement emphasized that sexual predators can be found not just in high-profile industries like Hollywood but also within the country music genre.
As the case unfolds, Brooks has not yet issued a public statement regarding the allegations.
