Emanuela Rusta Takes Stand Against Sexualization in Football
Referee Emanuela Rusta Shuts Down Instagram After Receiving Sexist Comments
Emanuela Rusta, a 30-year-old female referee from Albania, has closed her Instagram account due to persistent sexualization and sexist comments from fans. Known for her role in the Women’s Champions League and as the first woman to referee a men’s match in the Albanian SuperLiga, Rusta has faced unwanted attention focused on her appearance rather than her skills.
A Journey of Professionalism Amidst Challenges
Rusta has recently officiated in high-profile matches, including a Champions League game between Sporting Lisbon and Real Madrid. However, media headlines often reduce her achievements to phrases like “the sexy referee,” overshadowing her professionalism.
“I wish they would focus more on my capabilities as a referee rather than my looks,” Rusta expressed, emphasizing the need to break the glass ceiling in a male-dominated sport.
Advocating for Gender Equality in Officiating
Despite the challenges, Rusta believes in the potential for female referees to gain equal recognition. She cited the Albanian Referees Association’s support for women in officiating and expressed hope for a future where multiple women officiate top men’s matches.
Rusta’s experience echoes that of Stephanie Frappart, who made history as the first female referee in a men’s Champions League game in 2020 and officiated at the 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar.
