Former Arsenal Player Arrested for Alleged £600,000 Cannabis Smuggling
Former Arsenal striker Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been charged with importing cannabis after UK Border Force officials seized £600,000 worth of the substance at London Stansted Airport. The 33-year-old Greenock Morton player was arrested on September 18 following the discovery of around 60 kilograms of cannabis in two suitcases that had arrived from Bangkok earlier in the month.
Emmanuel-Thomas Denies Involvement in Drug Smuggling
The father of two was charged with importing class B drugs and appeared before Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, where he was denied bail. Emmanuel-Thomas, who joined Greenock Morton on a free transfer this summer, strenuously denies any involvement in the smuggling operation. His lawyer, Nathaniel Gadsby, stated that the player is eager to clear his name in court.
Two Women Also Charged in Connection to Drug Importation
Two women, aged 28 and 32, were also arrested at Stansted Airport and charged with drug importation offences. Unlike Emmanuel-Thomas, they were granted bail after appearing before Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court and are scheduled to appear in Chelmsford Crown Court on October 1.
National Crime Agency Urges Caution on Drug Smuggling
David Phillips, a Senior Investigating Officer for the National Crime Agency (NCA), issued a statement warning against involvement in smuggling operations. He emphasized the severe legal and personal consequences faced by individuals caught participating in such crimes.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas began his football journey at Arsenal’s youth academy but struggled to make a significant impact on the first team. He made his Premier League debut for Arsenal in a 2010 match against Chelsea and briefly appeared in the Champions League before moving to Ipswich Town in 2011 for £1.1 million.
