Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello Turns Himself In to EFCC Amidst Corruption Charges
Ex-Governor Yahaya Bello Submits to EFCC for Investigation
On Wednesday, September 18, former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello voluntarily turned himself in to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Bello was declared wanted by the EFCC in connection with alleged fraud and corrupt enrichment during his time in office.
Consultations Lead to Voluntary Surrender
In a statement issued by Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, it was revealed that Bello’s decision followed consultations with family, legal counsel, and political allies. The statement emphasized that the former governor respects the rule of law and had only been seeking to enforce his fundamental rights in previous proceedings.
Allegations of N80 Billion Money Laundering
Bello is facing a 19-count charge from the EFCC, including allegations of money laundering amounting to N80 billion. Despite multiple summons, he had previously refused to attend EFCC interviews or appear in court. The former governor now aims to clear his name, insisting he has “nothing to hide and nothing to fear.”
Accompanied by High-Profile Allies
Yahaya Bello was accompanied to EFCC headquarters by high-profile individuals, and his team expressed hope that the anti-graft agency would uphold his fundamental rights as a Nigerian citizen. Details of his interactions with EFCC operatives will be released in due course.
