For 12 minutes, security stood in front of Courtney Clenney’s flat as she fatally stabbed her Nigerian boyfriend (Watch)
According to lawyers representing Christian Obumseli’s estate, security at Courtney Clenney’s luxury Miami apartment complex failed to take action for several minutes when they were informed of a fight inside the couple’s unit. They stood outside the apartment door for 12 minutes before Courtney herself called the police, admitting that she had fatally stabbed him. The lawsuit claims that despite knowing about Clenney’s history of disturbances and erratic behavior, security did nothing to intervene.
The couple had moved into the apartment complex in January 2022, and during their stay, building staff and police had responded to the apartment nine times, including two incidents on the day they moved in. Additionally, footage showed Clenney going after Obumseli in a building elevator months before his death.
In response to the lawsuit, Clenney’s co-counsel, Frank Andrew Prieto, argued that her actions were taken in self-defense due to suffering from Obumseli’s mental and physical abuse. He pointed out that Clenney had sought help by calling security and the police on multiple occasions.
The unit’s owner had initiated the eviction process in March after receiving numerous complaints from other residents, but they reconsidered after Clenney disclosed her recent diagnosis of severe borderline personality disorder and her decision to take medication to address it.
Chio Obumseli, representing his son’s estate, filed a lawsuit against Clenney, the apartment complex (One Paraiso), its related parties, and the security company involved, alleging that they could have prevented the murder.
Courtney Clenney, aged 26, is charged with second-degree murder for the death of her boyfriend. Her attorneys have claimed a history of abuse by Obumseli and mentioned that she had obtained a restraining order against him just days before the fatal attack.
