Elon Musk Calls Facebook Censorship Revelations a ‘First Amendment Violation’ After Mark Zuckerberg Admits White House Pressured Meta to Censor COVID Misinformation
Elon Musk has condemned the recent revelations that the Biden administration pressured Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to censor COVID-19 misinformation as a violation of the First Amendment.
In a letter released last night to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged that the Biden administration’s demands for Facebook to remove what they considered COVID misinformation were inappropriate.
Zuckerberg, 40, also disclosed that Meta had ‘demoted’ stories about Hunter Biden’s laptop and promised to resist future censorship attempts. He stated that the White House had persistently pressured Meta to remove certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire, and expressed frustration when Meta did not comply.
Musk, a staunch advocate for free speech, criticized the situation on X, his social media platform, calling it a ‘First Amendment violation.’ He further emphasized his commitment to supporting diverse viewpoints on his platform, even those he personally disagrees with, and encouraged users to voice their concerns.
Zuckerberg expressed regret for not being more vocal against the White House’s pressure, acknowledging that some decisions made during the pandemic would not be made today. He affirmed Meta’s stance on resisting content pressures from any administration in the future.
The White House previously stated that their approach is to encourage responsible actions from tech companies to protect public health and safety while allowing these companies to make independent decisions about the information they share.
