Karen Read Sued for Wrongful Death by Late Boyfriend’s Family Following Tragic Incident Involving Boston Cop
Karen Read is now facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of her late boyfriend, John O’Keefe. In addition to targeting Read, the family is also suing two bars they claim overserved her alcohol before the fatal incident in 2022, where she allegedly struck O’Keefe with her SUV.
According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, John’s brother, Paul O’Keefe, along with other family members, have filed a civil suit against Read for wrongful death and emotional distress. The lawsuit comes as Read prepares for her second murder trial, after the first ended in a mistrial.
The O’Keefe family alleges that Read acted recklessly after drinking, accusing her of hitting John—who was a Boston police officer—with her SUV and then leaving him to die in a snowy yard. They argue that Read ignored the risks associated with her actions, leading to the tragic outcome.
The lawsuit also targets two bars, C.F. McCarthy’s and Waterfall Bar & Grille, accusing them of negligently overserving Read when she was already visibly intoxicated.
This legal action follows the recent announcement that Karen Read will return to criminal court for a retrial on January 27, 2025. Her initial trial ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury. Read had been charged with second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter while driving under the influence, and leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in injury or death.
