Republican VP Candidate J.D. Vance Clarifies ‘Cat Lady’ Remark as Sarcasm
J.D. Vance, the U.S. Senator and Republican Vice Presidential candidate running alongside Donald Trump, recently addressed the backlash over his controversial “cat lady” comment during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Vance explained that his remark, originally made in 2021, was intended as sarcasm but was misinterpreted by many. He expressed regret that his words were taken out of context, though he stopped short of issuing a full retraction.
In the interview, Vance clarified that his comment was meant to underscore the economic challenges that prevent many women from starting families. He emphasized that a Trump-Vance administration would focus on improving these conditions to support family growth. Despite this clarification, critics, including Oprah Winfrey, have continued to voice their disapproval. Winfrey directly criticized Vance in a speech at the Democratic National Convention.
The controversy began when Vance criticized Democratic leaders like Vice President Kamala Harris and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for not having children. While he stood by the essence of his original statement, Vance expressed regret over how the public perceived it and accused the Democratic National Committee and Kamala Harris of twisting his words.
