Three killed, five seriously injured in knife attack in germany
Three people were killed and five others seriously injured in a knife attack at a festival in germany. the attack occurred at around 10 pm local time on friday, august 23, when a single, unidentified man attacked multiple people with a knife. police reported that the perpetrator is still at large.
the incident took place during a festival celebrating solingen’s 650th anniversary in north rhine-westphalia, germany’s most populous state, which borders the netherlands.
according to the bild newspaper, the assailant fled the scene after randomly attacking festival-goers.
police believe the stabbings were carried out by a lone attacker.
initial reports put the number of seriously injured at five, but herbert reul, the region’s top security official, later stated that six people were seriously injured. reul visited the scene in the early hours of saturday.
reul described the incident as a targeted attack on human life but refrained from speculating on the motive, saying, “none of us knows why the attack took place. i can’t say anything about the motive now.” he also noted that the attacker left the scene “relatively quickly.”
the festival, known as the festival of diversity, had started on friday to mark solingen’s 650th anniversary. it was supposed to continue through sunday, featuring live music, cabaret, and acrobatics on several stages throughout the city.
following the attack, the festival was halted, and attendees were told to leave the area.
solingen’s mayor, tim kurzbach, expressed his shock in a facebook post, saying, “we in solingen are all in shock. we all wanted to celebrate our city’s anniversary together and now have dead and wounded to lament. it breaks my heart that an attack on our city happened.”
in response to such incidents, the german government has been working to toughen rules on knives carried in public by reducing the allowed blade length.
