A distressing incident has come to light in Manipur, India, where a video has surfaced showing two women belonging to the Kuk! tribe being subjected to public humiliation by a mob. The viral video depicts numerous young men accompanying others who forcibly take the distressed women into nearby fields.
The Kuki people are an ethnic group residing in various northeastern Indian states, including Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram.
According to reports, the assault occurred near B Phainom village in the Kangpokpi district on May 4. The incident followed clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Fleeing from the violence in a nearby village, the women and their families took refuge through a dirt lane. Unfortunately, they were discovered by the mob.
The mob proceeded to attack the women, demanding that they remove their clothing. The victims, fearing for their lives, complied and were physically assaulted by the men. One of the women, in her forties, revealed that she was unaware of the fate of her 21-year-old neighbor, as they were separated during the ordeal.
The woman recounted being dragged to a paddy field near the road, where she was forced to lie down. Although the men threatened to rape her, they ultimately did not carry out the act. However, they did subject her to further physical assault, including grabbing her breasts.
A police complaint lodged by the women’s relatives alleges that one of the women was subsequently gang-raped. Based on the complaint, a zero FIR (a first information report) was registered on May 18 at the Saikul police station in the Kangpokpi district. The complaint lists charges of rape, murder, and other offenses against the “unknown miscreants,” estimated to be around 800-1,000 individuals, who carried sophisticated weapons during the attack.
According to the complaint, the mob also proceeded to burn and vandalize houses in the village. It specifically mentions five residents who were attempting to escape toward the forest to ensure their safety.
