Manchester City has confirmed the £81 million transfer of Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid, with the Argentine striker signing a six-year contract.
The 24-year-old forward departs from the Premier League champions after two-and-a-half years at the club. Alvarez arrived in Madrid on Sunday after receiving clearance to travel for a medical once the financial terms between the two clubs were finalized.
City announced Alvarez’s departure on Monday afternoon, coinciding with Atletico Madrid’s statement on his arrival. The transfer marks the exit of one of football’s brightest rising talents from English football.
Alvarez’s six-year deal with Atletico Madrid positions him as a key player under Diego Simeone’s management. Atletico Madrid is also reportedly in talks with Chelsea regarding other potential transfers.
Reflecting on his time at Manchester City, Alvarez expressed his gratitude: “Today, I say goodbye to this amazing club with a lot of emotion. These have been two very special years, during which I have grown and learned a lot, both as a player and as a person.”
He added, “To the directors and technical staff, thank you for your confidence and support. Your teachings and vision have greatly contributed to my development. To my teammates, thank you for every moment we’ve shared, and for the effort and dedication in every training session and match. I’ve learned so much from each of you, and I will cherish these memories and friendships forever.”
Manchester City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, also shared his thoughts: “Everyone at Manchester City wishes Julian the very best for the next stage of his career. He has been a pleasure to work with. His attitude has been exemplary since day one, which is why he has developed so much.”
“The trophies he has already won speak for themselves—he is a winner. I look forward to watching him continue to grow in his career,” Begiristain concluded.
