Rishi Sunak’s bodyguard, employed by the Metropolitan Police, has been arrested and suspended amid allegations of betting on the election date.
The Gambling Commission alerted the Met on Friday about an investigation into bets reportedly placed by a police constable from the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command, as per BBC reports.
Metropolitan Police swiftly referred the matter to their Directorate of Professional Standards, launching an investigation and withdrawing the officer from active duty.
On Monday, the officer was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, subsequently released on bail pending further investigation. The Independent Office for Police Conduct has also been informed of the case.
The Gambling Commission leads the investigation into alleged betting offenses related to the election date, running concurrently with the Met’s inquiry.
In response to the incident, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper called for a Cabinet Office inquiry, highlighting concerns of potential government scandal and demanding transparency regarding who knew about the situation and when.
