DSS Warns Nigerians About Planned Protests
The Department of State Services (DSS) has received information about plans by certain individuals and groups to hold physical protests in various parts of the country on Wednesday, June 12.
According to a statement by the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, these protests are intended to coincide with the Democracy Day Celebration and are driven by “sinister objectives.”
Afunanya emphasized that while citizens have the right to assemble and express themselves, these freedoms should not compromise public safety and national security.
The DSS cautioned that efforts by some non-state actors to provoke widespread dissatisfaction through potentially violent demonstrations will not be tolerated.
The statement reads, in part:
“It is important to recognize that violent demonstrations are inconsistent with the Federal Government’s peaceful approach to resolving issues, including those related to the minimum wage. Citizens are therefore urged to resist any attempts to incite lawlessness or disorder. Those with grievances are encouraged to use appropriate channels and procedures to express their concerns.”
The DSS reiterated its commitment to protecting the country from harmful actions planned by discontented groups aiming to disrupt law and order. The agency will continue to work with all relevant stakeholders, including other security agencies, to maintain peace and safeguard lives and property nationwide. Law-abiding citizens are encouraged to go about their activities without fear.
The DSS also extended congratulations to the government and citizens on the occasion of 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, calling for ongoing patriotism, unity, and dedication to building a shared vision for Nigeria. The DSS provided its contact information for public use: website http://dss.gov.ng, email dsspr@dss.gov.ng, and phone numbers +2349153391309 and +2349088373514.
