Tobi ‘Shina’ Makinde recently revealed the influence Portable had on his portrayal in the acclaimed Nigerian film “A Tribe Called Judah.” Recounting his experience during the shoot, Tobi explained that playing the role of Shina posed a creative challenge, pushing him beyond his previous cinematic roles. Having previously depicted a mobster, Tobi shared that he had to acquaint himself with the persona required for the character. When assigned the role, he immediately thought of the controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, aka Portable, as his inspiration. During an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Tobi emphasized the necessity of drawing inspiration from Portable, specifically citing the singer’s “Zazoo Zehh” persona. He also touched upon public perceptions of him, particularly when flaunting a distinctive hairstyle.
Expressing the creative stretch Shina brought, Tobi explained how he ventured into unexplored realms. Reflecting on the diverse sources actors draw inspiration from, he highlighted the role of personal experiences and observing others.
In Tobi’s case, Portable served as a pivotal reference. He followed Portable on social media, watching his videos for laughter and learning. Tobi incorporated street language to authentically breathe life into the character, illustrating the multifaceted process of his artistic transformation.
