Teacher Accepts Plea Deal for Felony Charges of S*xual Battery and R@pe of a Minor
A former Idaho schoolteacher, Jessica Lawson, has been sentenced to prison after admitting to engaging in s*xual battery and r@pe of a 16-year-old boy who had recently been adopted by a local family. Lawson, aged 36, struck a plea deal to avoid further charges, including felony delivery of a controlled substance and misdemeanor alcohol distribution to a minor.
Incident Involving Drugs, Alcohol, and Inappropriate Behavior
Lawson, who previously taught at South Fremont High School, provided the minor with marijuana and alcohol before committing the assault. The charges relating to drug and alcohol distribution were dropped as part of her plea deal, leaving her facing a two to 20-year prison sentence. She will also be required to register as a s*x offender and participate in offender treatment program
Drunken Incident Leads to Arrest
On the morning of November 6, 2023, Lawson’s car was pulled over by a Saint Anthony police officer due to malfunctioning taillights. At the time of the stop, the officer discovered the teenage boy behind the wheel, explaining that Lawson, too intoxicated to drive, had handed him the keys. The boy admitted to smoking marijuana, which had been provided by Lawson, and was subsequently escorted home by the officer.
Admission and Subsequent Arrest
Following the traffic stop, the boy disclosed to his parents that Lawson had picked him up that night, during which they drank alcohol, smoked marijuana, and had s*xual intercourse. Initially, Lawson contacted the boy’s parents, admitting to providing him with alcohol but denying any other wrongdoing. However, she was arrested later that week after further investigation into the assault.
Family’s Emotional Testimony
The boy’s parents, who had adopted him just days before the assault, provided emotional testimony in court, describing the long-term damage caused by Lawson’s actions. The father expressed his belief that their son, having been through foster care, will struggle to comprehend the full extent of the emotional trauma until later in life.
Father’s Statement
“It takes a village to raise a young man, especially one who’s been in and out of foster care and has never known what it’s like to have stable parents,” the father told the court. “My son is going to take a long time to heal. He doesn’t even realize the wounds that he has yet. He’s not going to understand those wounds until he’s a parent himself.”
Mother’s Perspective
The teen’s mother also spoke in court, sharing how the boy struggles to differentiate between safe and unsafe situations due to his experiences in foster care. She expressed deep disappointment in Lawson for exploiting her son’s vulnerability.
“We brought [my son] in because he needed someone, and he didn’t have anybody. It became clear to us that he’s a wonderful boy who deserves a loving family,” she said. “But he didn’t have a mom or dad to teach him about safety, and Lawson took advantage of that.”
Sentencing and Community Reaction
Lawson was sentenced by Senior District Judge Stephen Dunn, who dismissed claims from the victim’s parents that her sentence would have been harsher had she been a male perpetrator or if the victim were female. Despite the family’s frustration, Lawson faces years behind bars and lifelong consequences as a registered s*x offender.
