Collen Rorisang Mogotsi Receives 15-Year Sentence for Murder of Five-Month-Old Son
Brutal Murder Triggered by Paternity Disclosure
A 32-year-old South African man, Collen Rorisang Mogotsi, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the brutal murder of his five-month-old son after the child’s mother revealed he was not the biological father. The Lehurutshe Regional Court delivered the verdict on September 17, 2024, condemning Mogotsi’s actions and declaring him unfit to possess a firearm under the Firearm Control Act of 2000.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred in the early hours of November 8, 2017, when police responded to a report from Willowpark, Lehurutshe, where the infant’s lifeless body was found. The baby had sustained significant head injuries and was declared dead at the scene by Emergency and Medical Rescue Services (EMRS).
Domestic Dispute Leads to Tragedy
Reports indicate that an argument had erupted between Mogotsi and the baby’s mother earlier that night. During the confrontation, she disclosed that the infant was not his biological child, which reportedly led to Mogotsi assaulting the baby. He then informed the mother that the child was dead and must be returned to her family home.
Law Enforcement Response and Conviction
Mogotsi was arrested shortly after the incident was reported and faced court on November 13, 2017. The case was pursued with diligence by investigative officer Sergeant Thabo Tshweu and prosecutor Neo Sedumedi. Their efforts, along with support from Lieutenant General Sello Kwena and Rachel Makhari, North West director of public prosecutions, were instrumental in securing the conviction.
