Lawsuit Claims Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ Copies Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man’
Miley Cyrus is facing a copyright infringement lawsuit, with Tempo Music Investments accusing her of copying elements from Bruno Mars’ 2013 hit song, When I Was Your Man, in her chart-topping single, Flowers.
The lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, claims that Flowers shares several musical similarities with Bruno Mars’ song, including the melody, harmony, and chord progressions. According to Tempo Music, which owns part of the copyright for When I Was Your Man, the resemblance is so strong that they believe Miley Cyrus “intentionally copied” key aspects of the track.
Similarities in Melody and Lyrics
In addition to the musical composition, the lawsuit also points to similarities in certain lyrics between the two songs. Tempo Music argues that these parallels make it clear that Miley’s Flowers would not exist without the influence of Bruno Mars’ When I Was Your Man.
“Miley’s Flowers has been a massive success, earning a Grammy Award and topping global charts, but according to Tempo Music, it owes its existence to Bruno Mars’ 2013 hit,” the lawsuit states.
The company is seeking financial compensation and asking that Miley be prevented from performing or distributing the song further. Interestingly, Bruno Mars himself is not listed as a plaintiff in the case.
