Devastating Israeli Airstrike Hits UN School in Gaza
An Israeli airstrike on a United Nations school-turned-shelter in the Nuseirat camp, central Gaza, has left at least 18 people dead, including UN staff members. The tragic incident took place on Wednesday, September 11, according to reports from the Gaza Civil Defense and local hospital officials.
Casualties and Injuries Reported
In addition to the fatalities, at least 44 people were injured in the airstrike, as confirmed by Palestinian authorities. UNRWA, the UN agency responsible for Palestinian humanitarian relief, confirmed on X that six of its employees were among the victims.
IDF’s Justification for the Strike
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released a statement saying that the Israeli Air Force had conducted a “precise strike” targeting Hamas terrorists who were reportedly using the school compound to plan attacks. The IDF emphasized that the school was being used by Hamas for military purposes, a claim that has been made in previous conflicts involving civilian infrastructure.
Repeated Attacks on UN Facilities
The Al Jaouni UNRWA facility, which had been sheltering around 12,000 displaced people, including women and children, has been targeted five times since October. UNRWA stated that the school has not functioned as an educational facility since early October, underscoring the dire situation faced by civilians in Gaza.
