Greta Thunberg Arrested at Pro-Palestine Protest in Denmark: Handcuffed and Taken by Police
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested during a pro-Palestine protest in Denmark. The 21-year-old joined students occupying a University of Copenhagen building, demanding that the university boycott Israeli institutions.
Thunberg shared footage on her Instagram, showing police using force to enter the building, carrying assault rifles. “Police have been called, violently entered the building with a ram wearing assault rifles. They are evicting everyone as we speak,” she posted.
Images captured Thunberg handcuffed and being escorted into a police van around 9 a.m. local time. Along with her, five other protesters were arrested after blocking the building, with three briefly gaining entry, according to Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.
A police spokesperson confirmed the arrests but did not name those involved, stating, “Six people have been arrested in connection with the demonstration. They are suspected of forcing their way into the building and blocking the entrance.”
The protest was organized by the group Students Against Occupation, which criticized the University of Copenhagen for continuing cooperation with Israeli academic institutions amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. “We are occupying the university’s central administration with one demand: academic boycott now,” the group declared.
The protest is part of a global wave of demonstrations sparked by the conflict in Gaza, where more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed following Israel’s invasion, which was launched after Hamas militants killed 1,200 people and took 250 hostages on October 7. Pro-Palestinian protesters worldwide are calling for a ceasefire and have staged similar protests at universities.
