Trump Assassination Attempt: Newly Uncovered Footage Shows Suspect on Roof Moments Before Gunfire (Video)
Recently released bodycam footage from the attempted assassination of former former President Donald Trump reveals the suspect, Thomas Matthew Crooks, on the roof of a building just minutes before he opened fire at the campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last month.
The new footage provides additional context on the events leading up to the shooting on July 13. One bodycam clip, stabilized and zoomed in, shows a shadowy figure on top of the American Glass Research (AGR) complex building at 6:08 p.m.
The footage appears to show Crooks, 20, making his way to the southernmost part of the AGR complex rooftop. Meanwhile, another figure, likely a police officer, walks on the ground in the opposite direction, seemingly unaware of Crooks’ presence on the roof.
The officer’s bodycam footage, which lacks audio, captures him communicating with other officers and patrolling the nearby car park. At 6:09 p.m., the footage shows the figure disappearing, indicating that Crooks took approximately two and a half minutes to position himself and shoot.
The FBI has stated that Crooks accessed the roof by climbing HVAC equipment and pipes, moving across rooftops before finding his shooting position about 150 yards from where Trump was speaking. Although Crooks purchased a ladder hours before the attack, he left it at his residence and did not use it at the scene. No ladder was found at the site.
This newly uncovered footage supports a timeline previously reported by James Copenhaver, one of the victims of the shooting, who also captured a figure on the rooftop in a video.
According to a preliminary report by Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., Crooks fired eight shots at Trump, wounding him with a bullet that grazed his right ear. Firefighter Corey Comperatore was fatally struck, and rally-goers James Copenhaver and David Dutch were injured. A Butler SWAT operator’s shot hit Crooks’ rifle stock, causing shrapnel injuries to his face and shoulder, while a counter-sniper team from the Secret Service fired a shot that entered and exited Crooks’ mouth and ear.
Additionally, new footage has surfaced showing Crooks walking casually through a crowd in Butler nearly two hours before the shooting. The clip, released by Iron Clad USA, shows Crooks wearing a “Demolitia” T-shirt and shorts, passing vendors selling Trump merchandise. He was wearing the same T-shirt during the shooting.
