Nancy Pelosi Reveals She Hasn’t Spoken to President Biden Since His Decision to Exit Presidential Race
Former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently disclosed that she has not spoken to President Joe Biden since he decided to step down from running for president following a disappointing debate performance.
In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead,” Pelosi confirmed that she and Biden have not been in contact, though she insists this is not unusual. “He knows I love him,” she said.
During the interview on Thursday night, August 8, Pelosi provided new insights into her thoughts on Biden’s debate performance. She mentioned that she had advised Biden against participating in the debate, fearing it would not go well. “I thought we were going to see Joe Biden from the State of the Union,” Pelosi said, expressing her disappointment. She noted that she never wanted Biden to debate his opponent, whom she dismissed as a joke. Despite her concerns, Biden was confident and eager to participate.
Pelosi went on to describe Biden as “over-prepared” for the debate. She believed that he should have focused on communicating from the heart rather than relying on extensive preparation. “You don’t have to memorize anything,” she said, adding that Biden appeared too rehearsed, which she felt was not a good approach.
When asked about Biden’s decision to step aside from the race, Pelosi acknowledged that it was his choice and praised his legacy. “He made a decision,” she said. “His legacy is a great legacy.” Pelosi emphasized that Biden’s contributions to the country would be remembered, calling him a “selfless leader” whose influence has been significant.
Pelosi remained reserved about her involvement in the events leading up to Biden’s decision to withdraw. She told the Associated Press, “At some point, I will come to peace with my own role in this.” She emphasized that her goal was to preserve Biden’s legacy and prevent former President Donald Trump from returning to the White House, referring to Trump as “Bozo.”
In a separate interview with The New Yorker, Pelosi reiterated her focus on ensuring Trump does not win the presidency again. She emphasized that any actions she took were aimed at preventing Trump from regaining power.
Pressed on her concerns about Biden’s campaign during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” last month, Pelosi admitted that she had doubts about Biden’s chances. She stressed that a decision had to be made for the campaign to succeed, but clarified that she never actively lobbied others, despite rumors to the contrary. “I never called one person,” she insisted, though she acknowledged that people reached out to her expressing concerns about the campaign’s direction.
