All Android Users Must Check Their Phones Now as Google Bans 5 Popular Apps
Android users are being urged to check their devices immediately following a new warning from Google. Five popular apps have been banned after being found infected with the Mandrake bug. Discovered in 2020, this malicious software allows cybercriminals to monitor device activity, record screens, and even simulate screen taps remotely.
The capabilities of Mandrake are particularly concerning, as they enable hackers to install harmful apps without the user’s knowledge. Over 30,000 Android users are believed to have downloaded these infected apps before their removal.
According to Kaspersky’s security team, a new wave of attacks likely began in 2022 but remained undetected due to improvements in Mandrake’s ability to hide within infected apps. This makes it more challenging to identify and block the malicious software.
This issue affects users globally, including those in the UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and Spain. Even though Google has removed the apps from the Play Store, those who have already downloaded them are still at risk and should check their devices immediately.
