The Argentine midfielder was honored by his boyhood club River Plate on Sunday, July 21, celebrating his recent Copa America win. However, upon his entrance into the stadium, fans began chanting a racist song directed at France and their black players.
This incident follows Fernandez’s involvement in a previous racism controversy after Argentina’s victory over Colombia in the Copa America final. He filmed himself and some teammates singing a racist song during the celebration on the team bus.
