Root Cause of Cholera Outbreak in Lagos Remains Unclear – Health Commissioner Akin Abayomi
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, announced that the source of the cholera outbreak in Lagos has not yet been determined.
Providing an update on Saturday, June 22, Abayomi noted that new cases were recorded as of June 20, 2024, just a day after the state reported an increase in cholera-related deaths.
Infographics indicated that cases emerged from various areas, including Agege, Badagry, Ikeja, Mushin, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Epe, Ikorodu, Ojo, Alimosho, Eti-Osa, Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Amuwo-Odofin, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos Island, Shomolu, Apapa, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos Mainland, and Surulere.
Abayomi mentioned that the Emergency Operations Centre, in partnership with relevant stakeholders, is actively involved in contact tracing, community-based surveillance, public awareness campaigns, sample testing, and ensuring that patients with confirmed cholera receive proper medical care.
Regarding the cause of the cholera outbreak, Abayomi stated:
“We have not yet identified any batch of locally produced beverages containing cholera bacteria, but our investigation is ongoing.”
