Italian Football Legend Roberto Baggio Hospitalized After Robbery and Assault During Euro 2024 Match
Roberto Baggio, the legendary Italian footballer, was rushed to the hospital after being robbed and beaten by armed attackers while watching Italy’s 1-0 loss to Spain at Euro 2024 on Thursday night, June 20.
The Italian newspaper Corriere del Veneto reported today that Baggio and his family were victims of a home invasion during the match. The “serious attack” occurred at the former Ballon d’Or winner’s residence in Altavilla Vicentina.
According to the paper, the 57-year-old former forward experienced a “nightmare” lasting approximately forty minutes.
The report details that Baggio attempted to fend off five armed men who broke into his home. However, he was overpowered, and he and his family were locked in a closet. The intruders then stole watches and jewelry before Baggio managed to free himself and call the police.
Baggio spent the night in a local hospital and required stitches following the ordeal.
Baggio made history by becoming the first Italian to score in three different World Cups, netting goals in 1990, 1994, and 1998.
Throughout his career, he played for Italy’s three most successful clubs—Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan—winning two Serie A titles.
In 1993, Baggio led Juventus to victory in the UEFA Cup, scoring twice in the first leg of the final against Borussia Dortmund. That same year, he was named FIFA World Player of the Year and awarded the Ballon d’Or.
