Afrobeats is used to describe African musicians, not a style of music” – Davido Speaks. Davido recently weighed in on the distinction between Afrobeats and R&B, emphasizing that Afrobeats is more about African musicianship than a specific musical style. His perspective echoes Wizkid’s earlier reluctance to be labeled solely as an Afrobeats artist. In a resurfaced video, Davido clarified the difference between R&B and Afrobeats, mentioning artists like Johnny Drille and Chike as examples of R&B while highlighting that some of his own tracks fall into the R&B category. He pointed out Odumodublvck, an African hip-hop artist categorized as Afrobeats despite his drill style, illustrating the broad scope of the genre.
Davido also referenced Fela Kuti as the originator of the original Afrobeat sound.
