If the Super Eagles squad wins the AFCON 2023 tournament, they will receive $7 million. The Super Eagles squad stands to receive a hefty sum of $7 million (approximately N8.9 billion) if they emerge victorious in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast. Nigeria secured their spot in the final by defeating South Africa in a tense match that ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of play, with Nigeria winning on penalties at the Stade de la Paix, Bouke. As a result of reaching the final tournament, the Eagles have already guaranteed themselves $4 million. Earlier, Dr. Patrice Motsepe,
President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), had announced a 40% increase in prize money prior to the tournament’s commencement. As per the statement released on the football governing body’s website on January 4th, the winners of the tournament will receive $7 million, an increase of $2 million from the previous edition in Cameroon.
The runners-up will now receive $4 million (approximately N5 billion), while the losing semi-finalists South Africa and DR Congo will each receive $2.5 million. Additionally, each of the four quarter-finalists will take home $1.3 million. Motsepe expressed satisfaction with the progress made in increasing AFCON’s prize money over the past two years, emphasizing that a portion of the prize money will contribute to football development and benefit various football stakeholders and member associations.
