Ayra Starr Finally Explains What Her Lower Back Tattoo Means. In the course of Ayra Starr’s recent media interviews, the 21-year-old Nigerian singer, who has achieved significant success in her career, provided insights into different facets of her life. Despite her prominence, she remains deeply connected to her Nigerian roots and values, especially as her mother’s daughter. This connection manifests in certain actions she refrains from, out of respect for her mother, and in choices she has made that have garnered her mother’s scrutiny. During the press run, Ayra Starr openly addressed a variety of topics, shedding light on her mother’s reactions to her more provocative lyrics, her approach to spending, and, notably, the reasoning behind the tattoos adorning her lower back. This glimpse into Ayra Starr’s life offers a nuanced understanding of the intersection between her personal choices, familial dynamics, and the public scrutiny that comes with her rising fame.
Speaking about her mother’s thoughts on some of her lyrics, and some fashion choices she had to undo because of her mum, Ayra Starr said:
AYRA STARR: My mum is going to be blunt [about my music]. She’ll be like “Ah ah, must you say that one? Ha! Must you swear? Why are you saying that? You’re a child of God oh!” [laughs]. I pierced my nose two months ago, ask me where the piercing is now. My mom talked me out of that piercing. Everytime she’ll see me, she’ll say “I don’t even want to see. I don’t even want to see it.”
Speaking also about how her mother feels about her spending, Ayra said:
AYRA STARR: There’s this bag I want. It’s not like I cannot afford it oh. It’s just that if I try it, my mom! So I want to be able to get to a point where she doesn’t care about what I spend. But if I try it now, she’s going to be like “Ehn? You spent this on a bag?” My mum is very much a Nigerian mom.
Speaking about her tattoos, and why she got them, Ayra Starr revealed saying:
AYRA STARR: I have two tattoos. I have one on my back. The one on my side is supposed to be a cross but the tattoo artiste wasn’t that great so it looks like an addition sign, it looks like a plus. Then I have wings on my back because like celestial being, I am a celestial being y’know. I see myself as a star. Just a star.
