Policeman is killed at an Ondo checkpoint by a hit-and-run vehicle.
On Sunday, July 23, 2023, a tragic hit-and-run incident claimed the life of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who was stationed at a checkpoint along the Benin-Owo Expressway in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area, Ondo State.
Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, confirmed the incident and clarified that the officer’s death was a result of a hit-and-run accident, not an attack by suspected kidnappers as previously reported. According to Odunlami, while attempting to stop a suspected vehicle, the driver refused to halt, and unfortunately, the ASP was struck, leading to his immediate demise.
Following the incident, the driver responsible for the hit-and-run was pursued and apprehended by the military personnel at Sobe in Edo State. The body of the deceased police officer has been taken to the morgue.
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the risks and dangers faced by law enforcement officers while carrying out their duties to ensure public safety on the highways.
