I don’t regret getting married to a 15-year-old. the Yerima
In a recent interview on Channels Television, former governor of Zamfara State, Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima, openly discussed his marriage to a 15-year-old girl whom he met in Egypt, asserting that he has no regrets about their union.
Yerima emphatically refuted claims that his wife was only 13 when they tied the knot. He further highlighted that Sharia law, which is an integral part of the Nigerian constitution, permits him to marry his wife at the age they did.
The former governor went on to reveal that several of his daughters also married before the age of 18, emphasizing that people often misunderstand the legality and cultural context surrounding such unions. He stated:
“The notion of regret stems from engaging in activities that are unlawful and against societal norms. However, under Sharia law, which is recognized within Nigeria’s legal framework, marrying a girl of a certain age is permissible.”
Yerima continued, “It is not solely about being 18 or 20 years old. Sharia law clearly defines the criteria for a girl to be considered of age. Many of my daughters got married at a similar age, and they lead fulfilling lives with their families. Moreover, all of them have attained higher education degrees. For instance, one of my daughters, who married at the age of 16, is currently pursuing her Ph.D. studies in London.”
While this viewpoint may spark diverse opinions and discussions, Yerima firmly maintains that their marital decisions align with their religious beliefs and cultural practices, emphasizing the importance of understanding the context and legal framework within which these unions occur.
