In South Africa, a former employee of the correctional services was given a life sentence for the horrific murder of his ex-wife.
Simphiwe Mxosa, a former Correctional Services official, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court of South Africa, Eastern Cape Division, for the murder of his ex-wife. The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his children with the deceased and their maternal grandmother receive psycho-social counselling and support from the Department of Social Development. Mxosa hacked his ex-wife to death with a bush knife in front of their nine-year-old daughter, who had accompanied her mother to fetch clothing from his premises. The couple had legally divorced in 2019 but maintained their relations as a customary wedded couple. Before the incident, the deceased had broken up with Mxosa again because he had physically abused her. During the trial, Mxosa pleaded not guilty and claimed that his daughter had been coached by her maternal grandmother to implicate him. The State Advocate argued for the imposition of the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment, given the prevalence of femicide and gender-based violence in society and Mxosa’s role as a Correctional Officer for 14 years. The Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions commended the investigating officer and prosecutor for ensuring that Mxosa faced the full might of the law.
